They should really call it the deadline to: Trade Players without Tumor-esque contracts and Non-Cancers. After all, post July 31, the best guy on the market is usually a power bat, with the brains of Carl Everett, the hands of Jim Abbott, the demeanor of Elijah Dukes and the looks of El Guapo (No, I haven't been fucking with the "player create" feature on XBOX 360).
Without delving into the whole thing, the only two deals which matter are:
Luis "I eat Miggy's Leftovers" Castillo to the Mets
and
Wilson "I'm the next Wily Mo Pena" Betemit
Yes, the Braves got Teixera, I can't really counter that, it's a tremendous deal. However, Octavio Dotel? First of all, both sides of this town have seen how this experiment goes.
The Yanks? He sucked.
The Mets? Well, his biggest MLB contribution was helping the Mets acquire Mike Hampton for his one season of brilliance.
Anyway, more importantly, the Mets shipped out two cracker-prospects and the Yanks got rid of Scott "I'm Worked More Than a Teen-Junkie in West Hollywood" Proctor. Insurance if A-Rod leaves? Gimme a break! Betemit stepping into 3rd Base? Ouch!
Castillo looks hefty, he limps at bat, running and fielding, he seems to chop - like a fucked up version of Ichiro. But, he's still a better fielder than Gotay and experienced, starting 2B for 03 WS Champs Marlins (Played in 97, but was not on playoff roster), so time will tell.
But, the real point?
With the trades, the ethnic numbers look like this:
Of the 42 players to have played for the Mets so far this season:
USA- 20
DR - 9
PR - 8
VEN- 2
MEX- 1
CUBA-1
S.K.-1
-------------Viewed Differently:
21-Hispanics
12-Whites
4- Blacks
3- Jews
1- Asian
So the point?
When CitiField opens, it's a safe bet that the first Rosa Mexicana Concession Stand will open.
